Thoughts on Jessica Sanchez
Her presence in AI revives the historical and friendly connection between the Filipino people and the Mexican people. Centuries before Manny Pacquiao was colloquially referred to as the “Mexicutioner” for apparently defeating a lot of Mexican boxers, the Philippines and Mexico were both colonies of the Spanish Empire. History would tell us that the Galleon trade allowed Filipinos and Mexicans to mingle with each other. This mingling lead to the Filipinos teaching the Mexicans how to make “tuba” and for some of the Mexicans to reside here in the Philippines. Some historians would claim that the Macabebes of Pampanga are actually descendants of those Mexicans. So in boxing we may not be on the same side of the ring, but at least in heritage and in Jessica Sanchez we are one. :)
